Ahhh you’re hungry! What do you snack on without blowing your health-kick? Here are some of my favourite low calorie and quick healthy snacks!
Forget banana pops, apple pops are the way to go. Banana’s are notorious for being high on the Glycemic Index chart and a spike in blood sugar is not what I classify as ‘super’ healthy. Apples on the other hand, have low GI, are high in fiber, and also curb hunger. You can basically put anything on your apple pops! Start with something sticky like: almond butter, yogurt, or dark chocolate. Then sprinkle with your favourite super foods! I like chia seeds, hemp seeds, crushed nuts, goji berries, cacao nibs, coconut… you name it!
Put them on a tray and stick em’ in the freezer for whenever you are ready to pull one out and munch! You can also not freeze them and just eat them right then and there.
These babies are loaded with plant-based protein and fiber – perfect for curbing an appetite. You can make these as easy as buying a can at the store, rinsing them, and then leave them out for a little to dry (an hour). After they are dry, put them on a pan, drizzle them with some oil, add salt and pepper, and let them bake in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes or until you desired crispiness! I usually leave mine in the oven as they cool down to really dry the insides out.
Feel free to experiment with seasoning for these. I personally like to sometimes toss them with minced garlic, avocado oil and some cayenne pepper spice before I bake them to give the chickpeas a little flavour. Strangely enough, another one of my favourite seasonings is sweet! Toss them before baking with coconut oil, cinnamon and brown sugar! Once finished, throw them in a container and enjoy when you need a snack. You can also buy dried chickpeas too! I like The Good Bean brand!
Egg White Muffins! ^
These are not plant-based, but they make my healthy snack cut. They have next to no calories but they are still loaded with vitamins and protein. I usually make these on the weekend and just keep them in the fridge for whenever I need a little something to keep me full. Press here for that recipe!
Cracker + Dip + Veggies + Superfood! ^
It is a pretty simple equation for a healthy snack! Grab your favourite healthy dip like Vegan Garlic Hummus, avocado mash or low fat cream cheese to put on top of a cracker or rice cake. Then add your favourite veggies and superfoods on top. I like adding cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, basil, chia seeds, hemp seeds, blueberries or even for non-vegetarians, salmon. These will fill you up with protein and fiber, perfect for a pick-me-up snack!
As for other quick and easy snacks, veggies and dip are always a safe choice – or a quick green smoothie. There is nothing worse than being ‘han-gry’ (hungry + angry). I hope you can find your perfect grab-and-go snack! I certainly love these ones 🙂
